When I got back to my apartment last night, I noticed this on the door of one of the other now former tenants of my building. Because I was curious and this was posted for the world to see, I took a closer look. What was it? It’s an eviction notice, apparently they also weren’t paying rent; however, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Seeing this sort of vindicated my decision to just pay back all the rent I hadn’t been paying and not try to deal with fighting the system. I feel like they would’ve just evicted me and it would have been a nightmare. That 10k would’ve been nice, could’ve used it to pay off my 3, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but alas I just paid it back and moved on. Not upset with my decision; I think I took the most prudent option.

I read the back story, but I don’t get what happened with you. They offered an incentive to signing a lease, but you ended up not paying rent for a couple of years?

Financially responsible decisions aren't usually the sexiest options, but they are usually the wisest ones. People joke about not being able to drive a house, but it's really nice to have a roof over your head.

They forgot to add rent to my monthly bill, I think because I paid a partial amount the first month I moved in. I ended up not paying rent for a year as a result. I did pay some other things like water and rent on the garage.

Usually that’s a good thing.

So, they just forgot to bill you for your rent, and you didn’t remind them. Got it. Well, it allowed you to make what interest you could on the money and to pad your emergency cushion for a while.
You are a man of exceptional prudence and will power. I salute you.

I figured the worst case scenario was I was going to have to back pay rent, and the best was that I got to keep it all. Since it wasn’t really my money, I just kept it. I had the money to pay it to begin with, but i knew digging into my savings to pay something like that back would’ve been extremely painful. H aving to write that 10k check was still a bit of a downer, but it wasn’t my money.

My apartment in Houston sent me an eviction notice when I was late on my rent because their automatic billing system didn’t work. Really unpleasant, even though they shouldn’t be able to do that (the lease specifies a late notice/fee rather than going straight to eviction), and I of course went down and made the payment as soon as their office opened. Still stressful to get something telling you to be gone in two days, and I really didn’t trust them to actually manage things well, especially sinc e they had just screwed up.

That’s pretty infuriating. I will say, my apartment complex contacted me directly when the whole thing went down. I also think the agent thought she was going to lose her job over the ordeal, so that might have led her to react the way she did.
